Polish mountain trekking: ZAWRAT and Dolina Pięciu Stawów (Valley of the Five Ponds)

We arrived from Krakow that morning and set out on foot from Kużnice up through the Hala Gąsienicowa, stopping for a nourishing cabbage soup at the Murowaniec Refuge before making our way further along, past the Black Pond and up towards and across Zawrat.

Our initial intention had been to take the cable car up from Kuznice to Kasprowy Wierch and start our trek from there, but due to bad planning (we hadn’t checked that it was closed for maintenance that week) it meant we had to add a few hours more to our day’s trek. We started our trek at 10 am and got back to our hotel at 8.30pm..

GIEWONT- Trekking in the Tatry mountains, Poland

Giewont seen from across the valley

The best view, or panorama, of the mountain range is from across the valley on Gubalowka where tourists who aren’t in a rush often spend their first day acclimatising and taking in the spectacular views.

Palm sugar flapjacks

cut into pieces before it hardens too much

cut into pieces before it hardens too much

Finally, a perfect opportunity arose to use the half kilo of palm sugar I had bought some time ago and generally found too sweet for my liking.

I’ve never been to the Carribean but the idea of jerk chicken, which was new to me, had been following me around for awhile, until I decided to give it a go.

Baltic Coast- yup, we have beaches in the Tricity

„I know Poland has coastline, but “beach” is the last thing I think of when imagining the Baltic”

What better way to have your feathers ruffled (should you happen to live on that coastline) than to hear a statement like that? What? No beach? I’ll show them beach.

Embracing Space

As a slightly errant frequenter of my local church I came across this medley of shapes and structures in amongst the congregation with ceramic craters and what looked like overgrown fruit shells spewn over floor tombstones on one side and the gutted roots of a magnificent tree and a ceramic naked woman’s bosom on the other. Not something you come across every day in church.
